1.1 Session Description

Provide a Session Name, a Session Goal, an ESS Server URL (if any), a Session Password.

Note1 :  Session Name and Session Password are mandatory.

Note 2 : The ESS Server URL in an entry point  for  experiment specific applications or documents. If  “ESS ServerURL”/labfuture/xml.file exists, a specific interface will be started later allowing the administrator to choose a specific application on the ESS server (in this case, all the session URLs will be defined automatically from  the ESS server). If an ESS Server URL is specified without the presence of the  “ESS Server URL”/labfuture/xml.file, the administrator will have to specify manually the different session URLs.  If there is no ESS Server URL specified, no session URL will be specified.

1.2 Role Definition

Select the roles which will be available in the session (at least one)

Indicate which role if any may have a chairman capability associated with.

In the current version of PLATINE, specifying the number of persons per role and the maximum number of active users is not required..

1.3. Tool Selection

Select the tools which will be available in the session (at least one)

Note: The VisioConf tool (written in Java) and the Vic/Rat tools (written in C) are mutually exclusive. Vic/Rat tools, as they are written in C, cannot be installed using the Java Webstart procedure. They have therefore to be correctly installed before starting PLATINE. See details in the PLATINE distribution web page.

1.4. Access Rule Definition

In the current version of PLATINE, there is no way to modify the default access rules for the different tools. At this stage, you can check the list of roles and the list of tools available for the session.

1.5. PLATINE Configuration

Provide the IP address (or name) of the configuration server (always), the chat server (if the Chat tool has been selected), the whiteboard server (if the Whiteboard tool has been selected), the application sharing server (if the Application Sharing tool has been selected).

Default port numbers are provided for each tool, and the administrator can modify them if necessary. It is the administrator’s responsibility to check that there is no conflict among the used port numbers(for instance, selection of a port which corresponds to another application running on the station of some user who will register to the session). Look at TCP/IP Ports to have more information on the available ports. Port numbers should be greater or equal than 1024. Note that the same port numbers will be used by all the users registered in a session, and that these ports should be open on the user firewalls (if any).

Note1: In the current version of PLATINE, the configuration server, the chat server (if any) and the whiteboard server (if any) should run on the same station used by the administrator. Furthermore, the application sharing server (if any) should run on a different station. Keep in mind that the administrator will start the synchronous phase of this session from the specified configuration server. In this example, the administrator can start and s    Top the synchronous phase of the session “example” from host machine Corona.artec.uni-bremen.de

Note 2: If the given IP addresses are public, all users with an public IP address will be able to join this session If the given IP addresses are private, only users connected on the same sub-network of servers will be able to join this session

1.6. Integration with the ESS

Assume that an ESS Server URL has been specified and the associated xml.file does exist on this server. In this case, a module displays the information about the different applications available on the ESS server (this is currently the case of the ARTEC experiments). Selecting some experiment specific application leads to the automatic definition of the associated URLs, with the exception of the Asynchronous Phase URL which has always to be specified explicitely.

If the ESS Server URL doesn’t provide the adequate xml file, the administrator may possibly specify  manually the different URLs appearing on the window. This window aims at integrating the PLATINE platform with an Experiment Specific Server (ESS) through the specification of different URLs which will be automatically launched . The specification of all these URLs is optional. If no ESS Server URL has been specified, no window is presented and consequently no URL can be specified in the current version of PLATINE.

The Admin Synch Phase Start URL (if specified) will be launched on the session administrator station when the administrator will start a synchronous phase for this session.

The Admin Synch Phase Stop URL (if specified) will be launched on the session administrator station when the administrator will stop a synchronous phase for this session.

The Asynchronous Phase URL (if specified) will be launched on any user station when the associated user will register to this session.

The Synchronous Phase Join URL (if specified) will be launched on any user station when the associated user will join this session synchronous phase.

The Synchronous Phase Leave URL (if specified) will be launched on any user station when the associated user will leave this session synchronous phase.
