JavaWebStart  notice

Install PLATINE bytecode manual

JavaWebStart notice

Platine is currently distributed by the use of Java Web Star ©[1], which is a part of the Java Runtime Environment (JRE) since version 1.4.1. Java Web Start is also available as a standalone application (version 1.0.1) for those users not wishing to replace their currently JRE version.

Java Web Start is a deployment solution for Java-technology-based applications. It is the plumbing between the computer and the Internet that allows the user to launch and manage applications right off the Web. Java Web Start provides easy, one-click activation of applications, and guarantees that you are always running the latest version of the application, eliminating complicated installation or upgrade procedures.

Once the required application has been retrieved by Java Web Start, it is stored locally, and executed from the local copy every time it is required. However, at start up time, Java Web Start verifies if there is a new release of the application. In such case the new release is automatically downloaded and the local copy is replaced, so you are sure that you always execute the most recent release.

To start Platine you only have to connect to the URL http://www.laas.fr/PLATINE

If Java Web Start is correctly installed and configured, the required application files will be downloaded, and the main application will be started.

The main application interface will verify if you have installed the required versions of JRE (>=1.4.1_05 but > 1.5.0) and JMF (2.1.1e), and will also verify if the current applications directory for Java Web Start is your home directory. If requirements are validated you will be allowed to start Platine. (JMF is not required to start PLATINE, but it is needed if JVisio is used in the selected session).  If you are starting the Server you will see the Session Startup Interface presented in Figure 1.

Figure 1

In the case that any problem be detected during the test time, you will see the Session Startup Interface with a diagnostic message, and Platine will not be able to be started. Otherwise you will have an information screen indicating the problem why Platine cannot be started, as the one shown in Figure 2.

In the case of not having the required version of either JRE or JMF, you will need to install it in your computer by yourself.

There is a special case to be considered, and concerns the case when all the required software is already installed, but Java Web Start cannot find JMF. If it happens, verify that the JMF install program has correctly set the CLASSPATH environment variable. It should imperatively contain the next paths string: (the right path for accessing sound.jar and jmf.jar on your machine)

C:\ARCHIV~1\JMF21~1.1E\lib\sound.jar;C:\ARCHIV~1\JMF21~1.1E\lib\jmf.jar;C:\ARCHIV~1\JMF21~1.1E\lib

To set it up you have to access Control Panel -> System. There you will select the Advanced Options tab, and click on the Environment Variables button. There you have simply to add the previously presented path string in the CLASSPATH variable section, and reboot the computer for changes to take effect. Figures 3 and 4 are concerned with this procedure.

In the case of a problem in the Java Web Start applications directory, you will have to set it up, as indicated in the information screen, which is illustrated in the Figure 5.

In this case you are indicated that the Java Web Start applications base directory should be set to be “C:\Documents and Settings\Standard\.javaws\cache”.

To do that you should close the current start window, and then open the Java Web Start console by accessing the Start button, as shown in Figure 6.

Then you should select File - Preferences in the Java Web Start console main menu (Figure 7), and in the appearing window (Figure 8) you should choose the item “avancé” or “advanced” and you should type the directory indicated in the information window, in this case “C:\Documents and Settings\Standard\.javaws\cache”. This is illustrated in Figure 8.

Then, you have to select the “Java” item, and you should select or verify the right version of the JDK or JRE used. (Figure 9).
